ACC Tourney Hit With ‘Perfect Storm’, Fan Turnout Low

It’s hard to cheer at a tournament when your local heroes are not in the mix. Harder still when a series of upsets have even knocked out high-interest squads like Maryland and Duke. And it does not help that the economy has been kicked in the teeth for a while.

Add up the trio and watch the fans at the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament, normally a top draw, evaporate. Although announced figures for the four-day event came in at just over 23,000 this was simply ticket sales figures. Plenty of green, the color of the seats, could be seen for many match-ups.

The championship game between Duke and Georgia Tech was better attended, but seats were still available, including almost half a section behind one basket. This did not bode so well for the economy outside the arena, where entrepreneurs can usually command $200-$300 a ticket for the top game.
